Why "Expedition 1 Acre"?

The Team felt like it was time for a bit of re-branding.

We knew from the start of the project that we wanted to come up with a strong branding design to promote our ideas, especially having two designers on our team. Initially, we decided we would create an identity for our project based around our proposal to SGN. However, we then considered that having a strong social media presence, as well as a unified design across platforms, on our blog and during presentations, would make our project much more memorable and would therefore attract more attention.

At this stage in our project, our main priority is hearing from the people of Irvine about their experiences within their community and how they feel about climate change. Furthermore, we want to gain an understanding of what they are currently lacking in Irvine and how our design could benefit them. Therefore, we decided that when reaching out to people and making our project known, it would be hugely beneficial to have team name and logo to give our project an identity and a sense of purpose.

The Name

In order to decide a team name, we shifted our focus to the purpose of our proposal. As established by Edinburgh Napier and SGN, the focus of the project is:

“To make a positive impact within the community by responding to the themes of climate change adaption and bio-diversity in the context of health and wellbeing, education, community, and inclusion.”

When brainstorming as a group, it became clear that the community would be our key focus in this project, and therefore the residents of Irvine are one of our main stakeholders.

This led us to consider how our team name could centre around our location. We knew that we wanted our project to show that even the smallest of spaces can have a big impact and therefore decided to feature our 1 acre site in the team name.

Once we had this established, all that was left to do was to create a catchy and captivating way to tie the site area and the nature of our project together.

Expedition can be defined as:

“A journey undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration, research, or war.”

We are in pursuit of all three of these aspects – we hope our little one acre will help in the war against climate change!

And so comes the team name "Expedition 1 Acre"!

The Design

Next up we created an icon design that clearly communicates our name. We wanted to create an icon first as this can be used on social media and will, we hope, become our most recognisable element of branding. To create a colour palette, we combined the colours of orange and red in the Edinburgh Napier and SGN logos to create a bright red and used lighter shades of this throughout. We also used the navy colour which SGN have in their logo.

The design for the icon includes the "1 acre" title along with the shape of our site from above and a compass design to link to the "expedition" which we are about to embark on! The logo design includes the full team name and both can be seen used on our Twitter and Facebook pages:

Having established a colour scheme, we have been able to rebrand our website and have also been able to create exciting, cohesive graphics in our cultural probe kit which we will be posting about on the blog next week!

We hope you like our new branding and please feel free to follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to see how the project progresses; if you live in Irvine and would like to complete our cultural probe kit, please get in touch!

Welcome to Expedition 1 Acre.
